                                                                              Reading Literacy Narrative

When I was a child, nobody had ever read to me. My father was too busy working, and my mom used to tell me stories by heart, not reading it from books. One day, when I will have my own children, I will definitely be reading books to my children. I want them to be able to listen and start building desire to read on their own later in their lives. I have not done a good job in my past when it comes to reading books.  I read quickly and couldn’t wait to get to the end of the books to get the results. I don’t have any reading technics, not have I ever been taught any reading strategies.

I don’t really have too much experience as a reader. I hardly read books in my life. I did read few books though, and I enjoyed them much. I have read “Pilgrimage” “Eleven Minutes” and “Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe, and several others. I wish I had continued reading on a regular basis, but I haven’t. Maybe because I was too lazy to read or lost my passion somewhere. I tend to like books, which contain images, or short books that I can finish reading quickly.

Besides printed books, I tried to listen to audio books. I totally disliked it. I consider it as an ineffective passive voice. I easily get distracted when I listen to audio books. And it makes me nervous, because I feel I am not in control. It’s not as smooth as reading books, where you can pause, think, and re-read previous sentences.

When I was in high school, I used to read very ably with an intense focus. I found out if I didn’t read well, I don’t do well either, not in exams, nor will I learn anything. Those were school text books which I was kind of obliged to read. I guess I need someone to push me to read, otherwise I am too lazy to read. Same way in college, reading well will be the best way to be successful in college too. You don’t read well; you will not understand well, that simple!

Having said all that, I do not find any difficulties reading in my language. I might find it a little more difficult to read in English though, as it is not my native language. I might need to check the dictionaries every now and then.
